Drivers License / ID Restrictions

Driver License Requirements

• •All hirers must be in possession of a valid, original driving licence including photo ID.
• •Driving licenses must have been held for a minimum of 2 years.
• •Driving licences must be in English, Latin, or Roman alphabet.
• •Digital driving licenses are not accepted; a physical driving license in card format (not paper) is required to hire.
• •Non-EU citizens (with the exception of UK license holders) must bring an International Driving Permit.
• •The hirer is solely responsible for ensuring their licence is valid for use in Italy and whether an International Driving Permit is required. Arriving without the necessary documentation results in a non-refundable cancellation of the booking at the rental counter.

Rental May Be Denied For

• •Previous driving disqualifications
• •Pending prosecution or police enquiry
• •Convictions for offences related to theft, fraud, or dishonesty
• •At-fault accident within the last 5 years
• •More than 1 accident in the last 3 years
• •Defective vision
• •The rental station may ask for proof of your return flight ticket before releasing the vehicle.

Forms of Identification: Valid photo ID (passport or national ID). Italian renters must provide proof of current address; overseas renters must provide proof of residency while in Italy.

Forms of Payment

Accepted credit cards must be in the main driver's name (full name without abbreviations), have embossed and clearly visible numbers, sufficient funds to cover the excess, and an expiry date at least 6 months beyond the rental return date. Double-circuit credit cards are not accepted. All card payments, including the deposit pre-authorisation, must pass CHIP and PIN verification at the rental station.

Cards issued by financial institutions and online banks may not be accepted. If a debit, prepaid, or electron card is accepted locally, a fee of 61 EUR applies. Failure to provide a valid card may result in booking cancellation with no refund.

Deposit and Protection Packages

Green Motion offers 4 packages with varying levels of protection. Basic is the cheapest but has the highest damage and theft/fire excess; Premium Plus comes with zero excess and a very low security deposit. The deposit is pre-authorized on the main driver's credit card, which must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the rental period.

Third-party liability protection (TP) is included (22% tax included), with maximum coverage of 1,220,000 EUR.

Insurance Information

Roadside Assistance: Breakdown cover is included in the rates. Contact details and procedures are shown at the local rental station and in the car documentation. Depending on location and circumstances, additional charges may apply.

Damage and Theft Excess Reduction / Waiver Products

Kasko Damage Waiver (KDW) reduces the damage excess to a lower amount as shown below. Customers remain liable for wheels, tyres, glass, roof, underneath, interiors, chassis, door locks and, for electric cars, charging cables and charging cards.

Other Waiver Products Available Locally

• •Theft and Fire Protection Waiver (TPW): reduces the theft/fire excess (may not cover events in Calabria, Sicilia, Puglia, and Campania).
• •Kasko Damage, Theft and Fire Protection Waiver (KDTPW): combined KDW + TPW at a reduced daily rate.
• •Super Kasko Damage Waiver (SKW): reduces the damage excess to zero (glass, tyres, roof, interiors etc. excluded).
• •Super Risk Exclusion Waiver (SRW): reduces damage and theft/fire excess to zero; not provided in Calabria, Sicilia, Puglia, and Campania — replaced there by the SRW Limited (SRWL) product.
• •Wheels and Glass Protection (WGP): optional cover for wheels and glass damage.
• •Care Free Hire (CFH): 10 EUR/day, covers deep cleaning, interior damage, damage to GPS/child seats/snow chains, and accident admin fees.
• •Care Free Refuelling (CFR): 1 EUR/day, return the vehicle without refuelling; only the missing fuel is charged at petrol-station rates.

Age Restrictions and Charges

• •Minimum age: 21 (Mini/Economy/Compact), 25 (Intermediate), 27 (Minivan). Maximum age: 80.
• •Young driver surcharge of 19 EUR per day: ages 21-24 (Mini/Economy/Compact), 25-26 (Intermediate), 27-29 (Minivan).
• •Senior driver surcharge of 25 EUR per day: ages 75-80.

Cross Border Restrictions

Cross-border travel is permitted only for rentals starting at: Milan Malpensa Airport, Naples Airport, Naples Afragola Railway Station, Naples Centrale Railway Station, and Rome Fiumicino Airport.

• •Cross-border fee: 9 EUR per day, capped at 100 EUR per rental.
• •Roadside assistance outside of Italy: additional fee of 300 EUR.
• •Unauthorised cross-border travel: penalty of 300 EUR.

Optional Equipment List and Cost

• •Baby seat (0-125 cm): 40 EUR per rental
• •Child seat (>125 cm): 18 EUR per rental
• •GPS: 11 EUR per day
• •Snow chains: 7 EUR per day (free at locations covered by the winterisation fee)
• •Additional driver: 9 EUR per day (300 EUR penalty if an unauthorised driver is found driving)
• •Green Card fare: price and availability to be verified at the local station
• •Installation of baby/child seats is the hirer's responsibility.

One Way Hire

One-way rentals are only available between the locations below; the surcharge is included in the rental cost when booked in advance. If a route is not listed, one-way hire is not allowed.

Unauthorised return at a different station incurs a penalty of 244 EUR plus 1.71 EUR per km for vehicle recovery.

Operational Fees and Policies

• •Fuel policy: Basic, Plus, and Premium are like-for-like; Premium Plus is full-to-full. Missing fuel is charged per litre plus a 32 EUR refuelling fee.
• •Mileage: unlimited kilometres for rentals under 21 days within Italy. From 21 days, an 80 km/day allowance applies; excess mileage is charged at 0.37 EUR per km.
• •Out-of-hours service: on request only and not guaranteed; where accepted, a fee of 61 EUR applies.
• •Delivery/collection service: 24.40 EUR per way within opening hours, plus 1.71 EUR per km outside the urban area.
• •Damage administration fee: 61 EUR (30 EUR for damage of 100 EUR or less), charged in addition to the excess.
• •Lost or damaged keys: 250 EUR. Lost keys are deemed negligence and not covered by excess limitation packages.
• •Smoking in the vehicle: 300 EUR charge. Animals are not permitted: 300 EUR penalty; extra cleaning is 97.60 EUR.
• •Late returns: 59-minute grace period, after which additional charges apply. Non-authorised rental extension: 300 EUR penalty plus the extra days at market rate.
• •Electric vehicles: 700 EUR penalty for theft, fire, or damage of charging cables; 100 EUR for the charging card.
• •Winter tyres or snow chains are included between 15 November and 11 April at selected stations (e.g. Napoli, Bergamo, Milano, Venezia, Firenze locations).
• •Some vehicles include tracking devices used in accordance with the data protection policy.
• •Accidents must be reported to the rental station within 12 hours using the CAI form in the vehicle documents.

Cancellation and No-Show Policy

• •All cancellations must be made in writing or through your Green Motion account; telephone cancellations are not accepted.
• •Reservations are held for 2.5 hours after the reservation time, after which they are classed as a no-show and become non-refundable.
• •Basic package: non-refundable, non-amendable.
• •Plus and Premium packages: 7+ days before the start date, full refund minus the cancellation admin fee; 3-6 days, 50% refund; 2 days, 25% refund; 0-1 day, no refund.
• •All prepaid reservations are subject to a minimum cancellation fee (15 EUR).
• •Premium Plus package: free cancellation up to 48 hours before the reservation start time.
• •Pay-on-arrival bookings: the no-show / cancellation fee equals the prepaid amount; no refund is due.
